We have a pop-up exhibition with lists of Box's men and women who served in World War 1, a map of the houses they lived in, and some fabulous photos of the people involved.
We would love to hear about your ancestor who served in the war.

One of the pleasures in compiling the website is finding about people from Box who became famous after they left the village. The young girl left attended Box School and moved to Bath aged 20 in 1900 to work as a cook. She moved to the Swindon area and became a power-house in local politics who had a road named in her honour. Jan Tapscott tells the fascinating story of Florence and her family which you can read under the Blog tab at Southard Family. We have had a tremendous response to our challenge to record the stories of Box's families dating back a hundred years. Most of these families had a young Box soldier who served in the First World War.
We are going to publish these stories every couple of weeks under the Blog heading so you can read about the people who created modern Box. We start with the story of the Cannings Family (a family of railway men and women) and young Samuel Cannings who served in the Great War. Please tell us the story of your family if they lived in the village a century ago. We have had a charming reminiscence of David Ibberson from a friend (who wishes to remain anonymous) about David's appearance in the Ancient Briton Scout Show: Dave was meant to carry ladies off the stage but, as Boudicca, I had to put him over my shoulder because I was the stronger of us two. I know about my strength because I gave him a little tap on the head with my Stone Age club and knocked him out. Now those were the days. |
