Washwell & St Patricks

30/1/2014

I love the site, and I am  looking forward to hearing all about Wash wells,  I was told once that St Patricks used to be a monastery, not sure if that is correct or not, but I have seen an old map showing lots of little buildings down by the two ponds. Sheila Parker

Hi there,
Just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed reading and exploring the many and various articles in the community history newsletter. It is really interesting and informative and as a newcomer to Box getting to know more about village history and environs develops empathy with, and awareness of, community. Gil van Praag

Walls at The Drilley

Really enjoying reading info. But have a question - just off the Devizes Road below Hatt House there is a footpath that now has rails leading to The Drilly, on the left just off the road there is a sunken stone walled thing - do you know what is is? Sorry to ask if it is obvious but I wonder every time I walk by it. Rose Ledbury

Can any of our readers help please?

Ashley Green Origins

I have tried with little success to find out about the history of our house, Ashley Green, which we believe may have originally been the wash house for Ashley Manor. The owners who we bought from said that they thought the house dated back to the 17th century. Any information, no matter how small or trivial would be appreciated. Paul Bazell

Have a look at the amazing video of Maisie Gay, landlady of the Northey Arms in 1934? This will bring a smile to your face.
