End of Era, 1912 Issue 10 December 2015
There are three incredible maps of Box; Francis Allen's 1626 map of Hugh Speke's property, the 1840 Tithe Apportionment map which recorded the church's entitlement from land in the village, and the 1912 Northey Sale Particulars map shown below.
All recorded Box at momentous times of change.
The Northey Sale Particulars map of 1912 heralded modern Box and presaged private ownership and development of the village in a way that had never before been possible. Without it, your house may never have been built.

Rachel Amelia Lee of Spa House, Middlehill
The Bagshaw Museum, Batley, Yorkshire, have asked if we can find a picture of Rachel Amelia Lee (nee Oldroyd), who lived at Spa House, Middlehill in the 1930s. She was a fascinating woman, the local secretary for the Egypt Exploration Fund, and to Box residents, a generous and thoughtful employer. In her will of 1932 she left £500 to Elizabeth Jenks, her faithful friend and cook; £300 to Isabel Simpson, her kind maid; and £200 to Tom Leaver, her man servant.

Thanks to the effort of so many Box and Rudloe residents there have been pleasing developments about the boundary debate which so incensed local people. See latest news at Boundary Update.

NEXT ISSUE - Tudor and Stuart Box
We are launching a new series in 2016 recording the Tudor and Stuart history of the village. This is the first time that this period of Box's story has been recorded in depth. The series includes enlargements of Francis Allen's 1626 map (see extract right), pictures of Box's manor houses and the story of life in the village for ordinary residents at that time. Make sure you don't miss the articles by booking on our newsletter list to receive quarterly updates. Extract of Francis Allen's map of 1626 courtesy Wiltshire History Centre. |
