Bargates: Modern Box   Issue 18  October 2017

Bargates was built in the early 1950s by the local firm of RJ Dyer, who built all of Bargates and half of the houses on Brunel Way. The picture above (courtesy Hugh Sawyer) shows the site being prepared with the erection of the first four pairs of semi-detached houses. John Harris who worked on the site as an apprentice records his memories.

Coming Next Year
Throughout 2018 we are featuring Box during the Second World War. This period of six years changed all sense of normality and is a remarkable record of how different life was just two generations ago. Here are some of the items covered over the four issues next year:
