Where Box's Servicemen Lived Carole French May 2014
Most of Box's servicemen were young and working in unskilled jobs before the outbreak of war. Many were labourers in the quarry trade so it is not surprising that many came from Kingsdown, Hazelbury and Longsplatt. The hamlets were less affected because agriculture was exempt from service, the workers being needed to grow food for the civilian population. But this was not the whole picture as the map below shows.
Locations in Central Box
Locations in Central Box
This map shows individual houses where the the servicemen lived in central Box. It shows how extensive the involvement was in Box. Every household in the entire parish would have personally known a serviceman, most knew of the deaths in other families either by personal knowledge or from sermons in their church. The number of households affected was phenomenal.
