The Wharf Mound Clive Banks September 2023
I was particularly interested Cath Knight's article about The Wharf Stone Yard which stood at the foot of Box Hill just before
Box Railway Bridge. I lived at 10 The Bassetts, the nearest house to the ramp which terminated the gradient railway from
Box Hill. I looked straight out to it from my bedroom window.
The mound stood next to the footpath from the Wharf which joined the one leading down to Mill Lane and towered about 20 feet above it. The ramp was to slow speeding stone wagons which would then run back down the track. Presumably, someone would then quickly change the points and allow the truck to continue down a gentle slope to the railway sidings. It was a hazardous area for workers there.
Probably no photos exist of it so I have dashed out a rough sketch of what it looked like. I recall that its surrounding walls were covered in ivy.
