When I was working on an article about unrecorded historic curiosities in Box, I tried to explore The Wharf area to see if anything remained of the mound which existed at The Bassetts area. It was used to bring to a halt the stone trucks which came down the tramway along Beech Road and under the A4. Young children in the interwar period would play there when the stone industry was quiet.
I found nothing of the small hill but recounted my efforts to an elderly resident. They told me that the remains of the iron railings along the boundary of the mound still existed in a garden of one of the houses at The Bassetts built in the 1930s. In time, it is possible that the railings will deteriorate and be replaced but, for the moment, they remain a unique reminder of Box's past.
