Postscript
The work on Box's WW1 tribute was a real community event. It started as a joint venture initiative by Carole French (Box's WW1 expert) and Box People and Places. Shortly afterwards Jo French and Helen Murphey's class at Box Primary School joined in and the children's work became an essential part of the event. Anna Grayson gave the children a wonderful introduction to the Great War through Cecil Lambert's diary of his war service. Carole French and Carol Payne produced and set up all the plaques, which many local people made a great effort to display. It was no wonder when BBC Points West came and recorded what was happening in the village in November 2014.
Box Parish Council could not have been more helpful with labour, photocopying and moral support in sanctioning the event with notices to residents about what was happening. They also assisted enormously helping to put on our WW1 Exhibition which attracted visitors from all over England. Special thanks go to Pauline Lyons, Alan Clench and Margaret Carey.
Several people have said that it would have been good to produce more permanent plaques but all the events were run on a minimal budget because the costs came out of the organisers' pockets. The total cost was £520 which arose as follows: 350 poppy plaques £345 and displays at Box Revels, School, Exhibition, Cemetery £175. We received grants from Box Council and from a village charity which reimbursed us fully. In addition we had the priceless assistance of village residents.
