Murray & Baldwin Memories Les Dancey and Bill Cooper February 2022 I have fond memories of the firm Murray & Baldwin featured in your last issue. My family lived next door to the factory and I well remember the stream which was used as their toilet in the facility. It used to be open to the air, just the other side of our wall before it was covered over in the car park. When we were young, the stream used to attract rats into the chicken runs in our yard. The company also used to make toboggans and, chucked at the back of their work shed, there were always strips of metal that they used for the runners. One time I borrowed strips for the runners on the toboggan that I made for myself. You can see their shed, behind our chicken run in this photo which shows left to right Les, Chris and Jim Dancey. |
Bill Cooper Added:
Great mentions of Murray & Baldwin in the last issue. Len Shewring was a very good footballer for the Rovers and the mention of village stalwarts Charlie Fields and Fred Tatchell rolls back the years. There was another workmate and footballer of Len's called Bill Giles. I once did a holiday Sunday paper round simply to pay for a Murray and Baldwin sledge It cost 7 shillings and 6 pence, a lot of money in those days!!
