Remembering Glyn Phillips                 Audrey Phillips        August 2023

We had a charming email from Glyn Phillips' wife Audrey, remembering events in Box and thanking us for our references to Glyn's memoires Operation XX and Me.
As it was Glyn’s birthday today (4 August), I thought I would write to you. In 1950 l had just moved to the area from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, where I had helped run a stables. My sister had found about Bill Peter’s stables and started to work there. This was shortly before Bill was kicked by a horse and ended up in hospital. It was panic in the stables! I was asked to help look after the horses and run the stables. Everyone told me “Oh Glyn will know.., Glyn will tell you.., Glyn will help you when he comes”.
He came at the weekend and we managed it together until Bill got out of hospital. I never got paid although Bill bought me a lunch. But he took my sister to the Derby to see Gordon Richards and Lestor Piggot,

Mike Frayling lived next door to Glyn at Barn Piece and spent much time in Bill ‘s stables with Glyn. He became a jockey and worked at Lambourn Stables. For many years Glyn worked for Mr Lambert at Hadspaltic, Chippenham. Percy Green, another friend lived close to Mr Lambert and was Bath City ‘s goalkeeper for several years. Glyn and l married and kept in touch with Bill the rest of his life, visiting him in Chippenham Hospital and his daughter brought him to our home for a visit.

Incidentally, the framed shield shown in Operation XX and Me was embroidered by me. It recorded every match that year with the result which I started to sew on the coach returning from the final game. Also my sister in law and I made the team ‘s shirts, embroidering badges on the pockets and a set for the youth team too. We got a mention on BBC !!
