Evacuee School Child in 1941    Mark Cogswell      March 2017
Mark Cogswell was evacuated to Box in the early stages of World War 2. Aged seven years in July 1941, he attended Box School and this was his class examination report from that year. He was in Standard 1 and 2 which had a huge age range of children from Patricia Hewitt 7 years 4 months up to Peter Hall 9 years 11 months.

Are You Listed?
Can anyone help us with the story of other children listed on the report? We would love to hear more from you if you remeber any of the children listed, particlularly if they are your relative.

When we hear demands for teaching to return to the basic 3 Rs, we need to also discuss whether we would really like to return to classes of this size, with a very wide age range and such a restricted subject matter. I doubt that Mark has been handicapped in his adult life by his score of only 11 out of 20 for neatness aged 7 years, so what is the point in marking it?

Mark lodged in 2 Roman Villas, Church Lane for only a few months before returning home as many of the evacuated children did but he has always kept his school report and childhood memories of Box.

Next year we are running a series about Box during World War 2. We would love to hear if you or your relatives have memories of Box in wartime.
