Pictures of Ditteridge Church
Illustrations by Laura Shaw from 1850 (courtesy Madeleine Symes) and contemporary photographs (Carol Payne).

These Ditteridge sketches were made by Laura Shaw in the years 1850-1851 when she was aged 15 or 16. Martha Shaw, whose story is told elsewhere on the website, described her daughter's illustrations in the family album.
Inside the Church

Martha decribed the illustration above as:
Niche & window in Ditteridge Church, the adjoining Parish to ours, and a lovely walk from us, both interior and exterior highly interesting.

Martha wrote about the picture above: Font in Ditteridge Church. I have liked to see Mrs Mullens baptize the children here, 1850. Mrs Mullens was Martha's cousin.

Epitaphs and Gravestones
Picture
Picture
Martha described this epitaph to John Cheltenham as Old monument in Ditteridge Church near where the old fresco is laid open, Laura 1851. The wording has been incorrectly restored as 1700 but Laura's sketch appears to say 1703.

Martha described this picture as Tombstone in Ditteridge Churchyard; it is a calm and lovely spot. It still is one of the most peaceful places in the whole of Box. The inscription and date have now been lost on the stone but you can clearly see the date 1678 on Laura's sketch.
