Thornypits and Links:
Boundary Review Proposal 2016 Alan Payne All pictures are courtesy of Paul Turner May 2016 A new proposal has been made for land to be transferred from Box Parish into the control of Corsham Town Council. Your opinion on the matter is requested by 20 May following the link below where you'll find a survey, map of the area and the full details of the proposal: http://www.boxparish.org.uk/ |
The proposal involves land to the east of the B3109, between Westwells Road and Skynet Drive, which roughly covers the area called Thornypits, the Links and land at the top of Westwells Road. Anyone who has views about Corsham Town Council taking over a large portion of Box Parish should complete the on-line questionnaire by 20th May, accessed via the link above.
History of the Area
Thornypits and the Links areas are between the newly-named Wadswick Green and Corsham Fiveways on the B3109 and you can see the details of the proposed transfer marked in green on the map below. The area is historic, possibly part of the Saxon common fields system for Box. It features prominently on Francis Allen's 1630 map of The Mannors of Haiselbury, Box and Ditchridge. In more recent times it was the area where Hungarian refugees were housed in 1956 and where the famous heavyweight boxer, Joe Bugner (Hungarian-born British champion, real name is József Kreul Bugner), visited Box to support the refugees and was spotted joining in traditional dancing.

There are 79 properties in the area presently affected but it covers a significant amount of land and it affects Box residents whose parish will be significantly reduced in size. If the transfer goes ahead, all the proposed new housing on the B3109 and at the top of Westwells Road (one side of the road) will be under the control of Corsham Town Council while the other side of the road remains in Box Parish.
The affected area, shown in green below, is known as Scheme 102 Corsham and Box. In some respects this is a more dramatic split than the 2015 boundary changes Corsham proposed for Rudloe, which were so vigorously opposed by Box residents.

You need to evaluate the proposals and let Wiltshire Council have your views on:
* The principle of Corsham Town Council putting in what has been described as
primarily a land grab for a large portion of Box Parish.
* The significance of the area's historic unity with Box
* The benefits of extending Corsham Town Council control along one side of the B3109
* The loss of rural conservation under the control of Box Parish council.
You can download the views of Box Parish Council below and we would welcome the views of Corsham Town Council if they would care to advise us.
