Jane Kynaston, Box School infant teacher May 2026
Miss Kynaston was an infant teacher at Box Church of England School from 1972 until 1999. She recalled it as a wonderful school at which to teach and she became part of the community of Box. She sent us these photos of schoolchildren from the 1970s and ‘80s. When she retired, she returned to her home county of Shropshire.
The headline photo shows a lorry on the Rec delivering half of the mobile classroom that was situated at the top of the playground. The second half was delivered shortly afterwards. It was my classroom until I left at the end of 1999 (when the permanent classrooms were built, now housing Beech, Chestnut and Sycamore classes).
The children didn't have uniforms in those days. and the whole class made Robin Hood costumes as part of their topic work for that term. We had an actor (Clive Mantle) visit us. He lived in Box at the time and played the part of Little John in the TV drama of Robin Hood. The infants really thought he was Little John and asked him some really funny questions!
The children were fortunate to have the Rec as an open space to let off stream and to enjoy the pleasure of playing and socialising.
