I have been watching Wolf Hall on Sunday evenings and have seen Great Chalfield Manor as a setting to some of the wonderful scenes. My maternal grandfather, William Thomas Miles (1895-1934), was a gardener there in the early twentieth century but returned from the First World War with debilitating lung disease and was unable to work. Disgracefully, the government refused to pay any form of early pension or compensation. Consequently, my grandmother had to work much of her life to bring up her two daughters (including my mother). When my mother married Leslie Bawtree in 1947, she was given away by her grandfather Andrew Miles (1867-1956).
