Box Highland Staff and Droving Notes Richard Pinker July 2024 Box Highland Teaching Staff I don't know if you were aware my mother got her very first job at the age of 57 in 1961 as a dinner lady at Highland School and stayed there until they retired her 15 years later when she was 72. I think she was much appreciated, certainly by the children. I remember that they would come up to her as adults for a respectful chat. |
Cattle Droving
Whilst I am writing, I have just come across a weird fact that I had never considered. I was attending a conducted history tour of a neighbouring village in Wales. It was quite significant in terms of cattle droving in West Wales, which was purported to have three cattle shoeing enclosures - shoes for cattle? Apparently, they were shod for the stoney ground and required 8 shoes per animal. They were nailed on and since you cannot lift their leg like horses, there were turned upside down to work on. The drover's women used to carry spare nails in grease blocks to prevent rusting on trip. I had never considered cattle having shoes but an internet search has produced an image of some antique ones and a realisation that plastic varieties are used worldwide.
