Box School's 100 years on Box Rec Text Claire Dimond Mills June 2026 All children's contributions via Claire Dimond-Mills As part of our celebration of 100 years of Box Rec, I went into Box School and delivered an assembly to all the children, showing how the Rec came into being, how it has changed over the past 100 years and what children have been doing on the Rec over that time.
The children loved looking at the photo of the Rec from the 1920s and pointing out all the things that have changed or not! They also loved seeing the photos of the Play Park from the 1950s-1970s as well as some of the ways Box School has used the Rec in that time. I then set a homework task – find a photo, draw a picture or write about your first memory of the Rec or your favourite thing to do on the Rec. We had a wonderful response with many children sending in their memories. |

Memories of Campfest There were lots of recollections of Campfest, Box School’s biannual fundraiser when the Lower Rec is turned into a festival site, with a stage for performances including class songs, magic shows, dance routines and comedy shows, plus games, food stalls and ending with overnight camping. Campfest started in 2011 so this year sees the eighth Campfest (we had to skip a year because of Covid). |
Sport and sports day was a topic that came up a lot in the children’s memories, especially playing football and cricket in their free time, doing PE at school, and winning the egg and spoon race. Box School has been doing sports day in the same spot, on the Upper Rec by the wall, since 1926!

In All Weathers Playing in the Park, going to Box Revels, hanging out with their family and friends, learning to ride their bike, are just some of the other things, the children of Box School said they liked to do. As we can see from the rest of the photos we have collected, these are things the children of Box have been doing for the past 100 years and hopefully will continue for the next hundred years! |
